Christmas in Sicily and for Italians living around the world is a magical season filled with traditions, delicious food, religious celebrations, and time spent with family. For generations, Italian families have gathered during the holiday season to celebrate their heritage while sharing customs and traditions from one generation to the next.
Many of these traditions revolve around food—not just the act of eating, but the entire process, the stories, the preparation, and the memories attached to each recipe.
For many Italian families, Christmas Eve is one of the most important parts of the holiday season. Traditionally, families gather together for a meal focused on seafood. Historically, Catholics treated Christmas Eve as a day of fasting and penance, and fish became the protein of choice during these religious fasts.
Depending on where your family comes from, the traditions surrounding which seafood dishes are served may differ. In America, many Italian families enjoy a multi-course Feast of the Seven Fishes. The choice of seafood dishes is a personal preference for each family, but the traditions and the gathering of several generations to enjoy a delicious seafood feast are the most important aspects of it all.
The celebrations with family continue on Christmas Day, traditionally spent attending church and enjoying a large Christmas meal, usually consisting of many courses. The dessert table may be an endless array of Italian cookies and favorites like cassatelle and cannoli, just to name a few.
Many of the recipes enjoyed at Christmas—pasta and meat dishes, along with all those wonderful desserts—have been passed down through generations and are cherished “family heirlooms.”
Passing Traditions to the Next Generation
Many Italian families show their love through food. Older generations enjoy keeping recipes and customs alive by sharing them with younger generations, and so many wonderful memories take place in the kitchen.
