What Should I Hang on My Kitchen Walls? Expert Tips for Italian Kitchens
When decorating kitchen walls, the most effective approach combines functional style with personal meaning. For Italian and Sicilian heritage kitchens, wall art serves three purposes:
-
Celebrates your roots - Displays like "Nonna's Kitchen" or Trinacria symbols honor family traditions
-
Creates conversation - Authentic Italian sayings ("Dove si mangia bene," "Mangia") spark stories during family meals
-
Completes your design - Coordinates with your kitchen's color scheme and style (farmhouse, modern, traditional)
The 2/3 Rule for Kitchen Art Sizing
Your wall art should be approximately two-thirds the width of the furniture or space below it. For example:
-
Above a 36" stove: Choose art 24" wide (36 × 2/3 = 24)
-
Over a 60" kitchen table: Select 40" wide art or a gallery wall arrangement
-
Small kitchen walls: 8x10 to 12x16 prints save space while adding personality
Optimal Hanging Height
Position the center of your artwork 57-60 inches from the floor—this approximates average eye level and creates a gallery-quality look. For art above counters or tables, leave 6-8 inches between the furniture top and the frame's bottom edge.
